Gracie and a bone

Gracie loves a good knuckle bone

Another month, another foster dog. This story is really sad. Two black dogs were dumped at my subdivision entrance. When I went down to get my mail it was dark. There was a black dog in the ditch. I grabbed her. The people living in the house closest flagged me down — there were two dogs dumped. One had been hit by a car. I grabbed the injured dog and we headed for pet emergency. The injured dog had to be put down. Her lungs were filling up with blood. She was drowning in her own blood! Ugh. They scanned for chips — no chips, no tags, no collars. Both dogs had blackened teeth. The vet said it was caused by distemper. So both dogs had survived distemper only to be dumped.

And so Gracie, Petey and I have been sharing the homestead. Petey beats up on Gracie regularly, so I want to find her a place where she will get all of the loving she deserves. She is surprisingly quiet with no shedding. She is a very happy girl. Weighs about 38 lbs. Black Lab is my best guess at her breed. She is very, very loving. She inhales her food — so she probably had to fight for food in her past life.

Spring 2009 at Petey's PlaceBut I am having fond memories of it already. So I thought I would post the only picture I took. It amazes me that with no rain at all flowers still happen. We have been extraordinarily hot, unusually cool and are back to our normal hot, humid occassional slight thundershower. Here at Petey’s place we have had very little rain. But the Johnson grass still grows, and grows and grows.

There is a sense of calm in my life. Both Fritz and Chrissy are home again. It is 53 degrees today in San Francisco. I yearn to be there. I will break out the weed whacker shortly and attempt to tame the Johnson grass.

Birdfeeder Maurader at Work

Birdfeeder Maurader at Work

My yearly Christmas wishes include a homemade birdfeeder from my niece. She blesses me with a beautiful handpainted, one-of-a-kind feeders and/or gourd feeder — both of which I adore!

I really use them. And I thoroughly enjoy them. So do the birds. So does the current middle of the night marauder visitor. I suspect a raccoon at work here. Mister Middle of the Night is working on cracking up my only remaining gourd feeder. (sigh) I am trying (for the second year) to grow some — but Team Brody makes the most awesome bird feeders!

Petey is trying enthusiastically to rouse me in the middle of the night (several times) to protect our precious bird feeders. Honestly I would rather have a good night’s sleep. And I really do adore my bird feeders!

Please say it ain’t so!

Some day we will get beyond legislating morality and move on to teaching our children to embrace our differences as the valuable gems that they are. Our differences teach us to grow as human beings, to create change and be creative. I had so hoped my home state was the there there. Color me disheartened.

Looking for a forever home

two kitties looking for forever home

two kitties looking for forever home

Not for me, silly, for the two kitties that I found while out for a walk two weeks ago.

Many of you know that although I love my dog, he is a cat-killer. It is remarkable to me that as a peaceful, loving being this four-footed agressive being chose me to live with. Oh well. We are dealing with it — sort of.

These two kitties are the sweetest kitties I have ever met. They are bonded siblings, very vocal, very active and purr as soon as you hold them close. Joyous, little beings.

I am looking for a loving, indoor home for these two characters. They don’t look alike, but they are inseparable. Do you know of a perfect home? Please contact me!

The Red Balloon

Just finished watching this lovely 1956 Cannes Grand Prix Festival winner. What a delightful film… I think I need to watch it every year. It was uplifting, made me laugh out loud, gave me awe, and suspended my disbelief. Film doesn’t get any better than this. And it’s simplicity is it’s most charming feature.

It’s the Harlow look

One leg crossed over the other. The pale, pink complextion. Complete blissful reclined position. Jean Harlow? No it is the Petey dog. The conumbrum of him never ceases to amaze me. He can kill a cat, skunk, wasp, scorpion and not pause for more than a couple of minutes. But in complete recline, he is a cross between Jean Harlow and an angel. It must be the similar feelings that mothers have when they look at their “terrible twos” after a completely draining day and think “How can this little monster look like such an angel at this moment.” God must love them all.
