His Name is Hooch

Found Dog = Hooch No heart worms!!! Tape worms yes, heart worms no. Took “found dog” in to vets today. He is officially “Hooch” according to the vet records. A pill today for the tape worms. And one more in 3 weeks. Appointment Thursday for neutering.

No big flare ups tonight. But I learned from last night about separating before even having thoughts about feeding. It is too hot to leave Hooch outside for long. I am really surprised at Petey’s tolerance. He is trying really, really hard.

Petey2

Think you are seeing double?

Think you are seeing double?

My neighbor came by yesterday with a dog on the leash and said “Petey has been playing in our yard all day.” As I looked down at my feet at the real Petey I replied, “I don’t think so.” But, he owns an unspayed female lab and this emaciated white boxes is intact — so he couldn’t keep the dog. So we put him in my backyard because it is fenced.

Petey really liked this dog. Really. I was shocked.

I drove the dog — I now call him “Hooch” — to the Humane Society. Hooch was scanned for a microchip (nada) and we went through all of the reports for missing dogs (nada again). And then I brought Hooch back home.

Hooch stayed in the back yard last night. Petey treked up and down the stairs whining at the back door. Hooch barked back. (It is a wonder my neighbors didn’t complain.) This morning I took both dogs for a walk and all went well. I felt like I had been walking on a rowing machine.

Hooch is young. Maybe 7-8 months old. About 2 inches taller than Petey but much, much thinner. His bones are actually sticking out dramatically.

All went well until about an hour ago. Petey nailed Hooch and Hooch is bleeding. Nothing serious, but enough to let me know that we can’t keep him. He is a very, very sweet puppy. Totally untrained, but very loving. Makes me sad to give him up.

When will it end?

The lightening last Wednesday hit a bit too close to the house — evidently. It interrupted an automatic update of Microsoft Service Pack 2. I think these updates should be called Service Reduction Packs… but that is just my humble opinion. A little interruption of the update caused a dll file corruption in my OS. And the rest of the weekend was history along with all of my files. I had to do an entire factory reinstall. Bummer. Really.

Petey hates computers. He pretty much doesn’t like books or newspapers either.

The service people at Microsoft were unable to help me. They admitted it. Unable to help. Geez.

The service people at Dell were fantastic! They know everything about everything. The high-speed internet service people at AT&T are also wonderful. Really patient, and really more patient. (Can’t say that about the phone service folks.)

I heard a really pitiful “smurrrrfffff” and immediately dug under the covers to find the dog… his head was missing. I grabbed the duvet and pulled and pulled and there was only a dog body attached. During the night Petey’s head had become buried inside the duvet cover and it had to be yanked off. No harm done. Oh my, what a way to wake up.

Petey at the Botanical Gardens

Petey at the Botanical Gardens

At the Botanical Gardens, today… really. And we went and it was very, very hot. We took a water bottle and drank lots of it and had a great time. Spent about an hour and a half roaming the gardens. They had some beautiful things blooming, but then they are watering and I am not.

Did I forget to say that dogs were welcome in the gardens for a $5 donation to the Animal Defense League? A great cause. And there were little kids swimming pools and dishes for water stationed throughout the gardens. But Petey won’t drink from another dog’s water dish unless there is no other choice.

One young couple let their two dogs bound right up to us. I almost freaked and mentioned that Petey can be aggressive just as he was checking out the genitals of the other dogs and wagging his little nub like a geiger counter. All went well. A few folks avoided us. And a nice gentleman came up to pet Petey and mentioned how maligned the Pit Bull breed is. His family pit taught his children how to walk and is a desperately missed family member. And then there was the lady that asked to pet Petey because she rescues kittehs and doesn’t get to love on dogs as much as she would like to. It was a good day.

And Petey is totally worn out. Very good.

It is disgraceful that the media is whipping up such a frenzy about Pit Bulls. Would you know one if you saw one? More importantly if you saw one that wasn’t would you know that?

Dog attacks on humans are all about the owners…

The National Canine Research Council has identified the most common factors found in fatal dog attacks occurring in 2006:

  • 97 percent of the dogs involved were not spayed or neutered.
  • 84 percent of the attacks involved owners who had abused or neglected their dogs, failed to contain their dogs, or failed to properly chain their dogs.
  • 78 percent of the dogs were not kept as pets but as guard, breeding, or yard dogs.

There is a great article that was published about the subject on the American Bar Association’s website.
